Hamsters are one of the favourite pets amongst young people and they are a great first pet to get as they can help teach young children lots about pet care, responsibility and routine without burdening them with the responsibility of a much more demanding animal. Your kids might be nagging you for a dog or a cat but, if you start them off with something like a hamster, they will be better prepared to look after a larger animal if you do ever decide to introduce one into the family home.

Hamsters, and their even smaller siblings, dwarf hamsters, still do need a lot of care though and the task of taking one or more on should certainly not be taken lightly, nor should it be considered a cheaper option either. Costs will have to be bourn if the hamster is going to have a good quality of life. You will need a decent size cage and will also need to keep up with demand for bedding and food, which is not cheap and which needs to kept fresh in order to ensure maximum comfort for your pet.

Also, because they are relatively small and don’t have high life expectancy, people tend to overlook insurance for hamsters but this can often be a mistake which leaves people counting the costs further down the line. Whilst things such as third party liability insurance are not needed, your hamster may well need treatment at some point during its life and this is likely to be expensive- insurance ensures that treatment can be carried out and that you won’t have to face having the hamster put down because you can’t afford a procedure which it might need.

Once you’ve dealt with all the boring stuff, however, you can get on with enjoying your pet and you will certainly get a lot of enjoyment out of a hamster. You can make sure it gets plenty of exercise by getting it a wheel or putting it out in an exercise ball; they might be small but they can bring you lots of happiness and make excellent additions to any home.
