Hamsters are one of the favourite pets amongst young people and they are a great first pet to get as they can help teach young children lots about pet care, responsibility and routine without burdening them with the responsibility of a much more demanding animal. Your kids might be nagging you for a dog or a cat but, if you start them off with something like a hamster, they will be better prepared to look after a larger animal if you do ever decide to introduce one into the family home.
